Kilala Lelum Health and Wellness Cooperative is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) with clinic coordination experience to join the Indigenous Wellness and Resource Hub (IWRH) at 121 Heatley. This role is ideal for a nurse passionate about harm reduction, health equity, and culturally safe care for Indigenous people who use drugs (IPWUD) and others in the Downtown Eastside (DTES).
The IWRH provides lower-barrier, culturally integrated healthcare, including Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT), STBBI screening, wound care, and connections to Elders, peer support, and social services. As both an RN and Clinic Coordinator, you will ensure smooth clinical operations while delivering trauma-informed, member-centered care and support.
Job Summary:
The Nurse Clinic Coordinator, supported by a multidisciplinary team, will provide excellent culturally safe care to members accessing the IWRH. Through a safety-first, member-led, strengths-based, and hope- and future-oriented model of care, they will provide healthcare for members disproportionately impacted by the ongoing toxic drug crisis. This role requires nursing staff to be comfortable working closely with members who use substances to support their emotional, spiritual, mental and physical wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties
- Lead program intakes, assessments, and case management.
- Conduct pre- and post-administration assessments for IM/IN/IV prescribed OAT.
- Manage overdose responses and emergency medical interventions.
- Provide HIV, Hepatitis C, and STBBI screening and primary care interventions.
- Create wound care plans and provide wound care.
- Perform urine drug screens and point-of-care drug testing.
- Advocate for members’ safety, autonomy, and access to wholistic supports.
- Maintain timely, accurate EMR documentation in alignment with member needs.
Clinic Coordination Duties
- Oversee daily clinic operations, ensuring efficient workflows.
- Provide support and supervision to clinical staff working at IWRH.
- Coordinate staff schedules, room bookings, and supply inventory.
- Facilitate internal/external referrals (e.g., detox, treatment, cultural programs).
- Liaise with multidisciplinary teams (Elders, physicians, social workers, peers, and IWRH staff).
- Support clinical program development, policy implementation, evaluation, and quality improvement.
- Organize team meetings, training, and debriefs.
- Ensure compliance with BCCNM standards, safety protocols, and cultural safety practices.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Clinical Expertise: Broad knowledge of nursing theory, RN/LPN scope of practice, trauma-informed care, and client-centered practice; proficiency in harm reduction, substance abuse care and treatment, wound care, overdose response, and STBBI screening.
- Cultural Safety & Advocacy: Demonstrated ability to provide culturally safe, non-judgmental care; understanding of TRC Calls to Action, BC DRIPA, and Indigenous community impacts.
- Harm Reduction & Crisis Management: Experience with harm reduction and substance use treatment, rapid drug testing, naloxone training, and non-violent crisis intervention.
- Coordination & Leadership: Strong case management, conflict resolution, and team collaboration skills; ability to prioritize tasks, train staff, and coordinate clinic workflows.
- Technical & Compliance: Current BCCNM registration, CPR certification, and adherence to professional practice standards; familiarity with EMR systems and clinical equipment.
- Adaptability: Flexible, team-oriented, and skilled in interdisciplinary collaboration; physical ability to perform job duties.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years in primary care/harm reduction/community health setting (preferably in DTES or with Indigenous communities facing systemic barriers).
Qualifications & Skills:
Required
- Current BCCNM registration (RN) and CPR certification.
- 2+ years of primary care/harm reduction/community health nursing (preferably in DTES).
- Experience with harm reduction, substance abuse care and treatment, wound care, and overdose response.
- Strong case management, advocacy, and crisis intervention skills.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed, Indigenous Cultural Safety frameworks.
- Ability to lead teams, coordinate workflows, and problem-solve collaboratively.
Preferred:
- Certified Practice in OUD and STBBI/Reproductive Health.
- Experience training others in naloxone administration and overdose response
- Familiarity with Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and BC Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
Working Conditions:
- The primary location will be at the IWRH at 121 Heatley Ave
- Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday, some scheduling flexibility required.
Supervision Provided:
This position will receive support from the Primary Care Co-Leads, HR & Admin Lead, and Executive Director.
Additional Information:
- This is a non-union nursing position with an hourly salary based on the BCNU wage grid.
- Ideal days of work are to be determined by the successful candidate to meet the requirements of 0.8 FTE (32 hours per week).
