Kílala Lelum is a training site for the family practice residents within UBC’s Aboriginal Family Practice Residency program. The program looks to introduce residents to the unique strengths of Aboriginal people arising from their culture and community and any specific health challenges that may exist in the community. The centre also serves as an educational environment for students enrolled in many health and social services programmes. In the past, our centre has hosted students from universities all over British Columbia (UBC, UNBC, UVIC) to complete their clinical practicum.
University students in our program will work alongside physicians, nurses and social workers to gain hands-on experience working with members on the DTES. The experience helps enhance their skills and broaden their scope of healthcare opportunities, ultimately contributing to improving their impact as future healthcare providers.
